WELCOME
------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the feedback on last months issue about Counterfeit Cuban
Cigars. Here is a typical response we received about the article.

"Number 5 is a great issue. Keep up the good work. MORE MORE MORE on
counterfeit cigars!"

Kevin Brackett

The article was picked up by a couple of the major cigar internet news
sites, one in the US and one in Europe. I hope it saves some readers
a few bucks. I promise to do a follow up article down the road.

The most important feature of a newsletter is that it serves the
readers. To do that properly the newsletter must be reader driven.
I remember I guy I know who did a late night radio show and always
wondered if he was just talking to himself at 3:00 AM. I could always
tell when the paranoia got to bad - he would say "Give me a call and I'll
get those requests played right away." Well there are times I get that
feeling. Does anybody read this stuff? Is it the kind of information
about Cuban cigars your looking for? I don't know what you want unless
you tell me.
Past suggestions have resulted in articles.
Future suggestions will result in more articles.
You ask, we produce.
Come on gang get those suggestions in!

FEATURE ARTICLE - CUBAN VITOLAS DE GALERA
BYLINE: Rafael Bernardo
------------------------------------------------------------

This article is number three in a series designed to reduce some of the
confusion regarding Cuban cigars. In issue #1 we discussed the strengths
and flavors of the various brands or marquees. In issue #2 we talked
about blending for strength and flavor. Senor Bernardo has done a lot of
work in cataloguing the relationship between the brand names and their
common denominator, the names used by the factories to distinguish each
type of cigar made.

A special thanks to Rafael Bernardo for allowing us to use his article.
Rafael has a great web site at www.mycigarsite.com

There are not less than 80 different formats of hand-made and machine-made
Havana cigars, most of them are described in this page. Their lengths vary
from 3 7/8 to 9 1/4 inches, while their ring gauges vary between 26 and 52.
Some of the cigar names, like Panetelas, are used to denominate vitolas in
different Havana brands, although their measures are not always the same.
For instance, a Romeo y Julieta Panetela measures 4 5/8" x 34, while a
Cohíba Panetela measures 4 1/2" x 26.
On the other hand, cigars of the same format receive different commercial
names. For example, a 7" x 47 cigar, usually known as Churchill, can be
named as Prince of Wales, Coronas Gigantes or Espléndidos depending on
whether has it been manufactured by Romeo y Julieta, Bolívar or Cohíba,
respectively.
Fortunately, there is a comprehensive relation of names for each Havana
format, that used by the people who makes them at the factory. They employ
a unique denomination or Vitola de Galera to distinguish each type of cigar.

Here are 77 of these denominations, with their measurements and some
examples of the commercial names (or Vitolas de Salida) given to them by
the most well known Cuban brands:

QUOTABLE QUOTES & CIGAR STORIES
------------------------------------------------------------

Happiness? A good cigar, a good meal, a good cigar and a good woman
-- or a bad woman; it depends on how much happiness you can handle.

--George Burns

MAKING LEMONADE

Most of the cigar smokers I know have a stash of hard to find cigars
stored away for that special occasion that never really seems to arrive.
The cigars just stay hidden away never to be smoked, more a trophy than a
thing to be consumed and enjoyed.
If you are living on the East Coast, or if you know people here, I'm sure
you've heard about the nasty cold that's going around. Well unfortunately
I came down with it a little while ago. Along with feeling miserable with
the congestion and exhaustion, the cold sits on your chest. This final
annoyance makes smoking a cigar one of the last things that you'd want to
do. It lasts for about three and a half weeks, if you're lucky. Now you're
probably thinking, yeah well what has that got to do with lemonade?
Hang on and I'll tell you.
Just before I came down with this malady I had recharged my credo units
with water. Normally this is no great event and not a problem. The humidors
are opened on a fairly regular basis and the humidity never gets too high.
Of course this is when the humidors are opened on a regular basis. Well,
what with being ill and not smoking, the humidors were not opened for
nearly a month.
I finally felt well enough to enjoy a cigar, and so I went to my humidors
with great anticipation. I was thinking of having one of the better cigars
as a sort of treat, not one of the special ones, but a good one. I opened
the humidor and looked over the cigars and saw, much to my horror, white
fuzz sprouting up on a few of my precious "special stash" cigars.
MOLD! OH... MY... GAWD! After my heart finally slowed to a reasonable rate,
I realized that only a few of the cigars had mold growing on them, which
was easily wiped off. Now I was in a quandary. These cigars had to be
removed so as not to allow the mold to spread, but I had nowhere to put
them except in a ziplock bag. Those bags wouldn't keep the cigars for long.
What to do? What to do?
Suddenly I remembered the phrase, "when you're handed a bunch of lemons
it's time to make some lemonade". Gee, I thought. Guess I just HAVE to
SMOKE THEM. What a shame, can't let them go bad. Nothing else to do!
Hee Hee.
Sometimes a glass of lemonade is all you need to make an occasion special.
So, let's raise our glasses and toast lemonade. Let's never forget the
recipe, and may it always be sweet.

*-----------------HOT TIP------------------*

Remember that temperature is just as important
as humidity in your humidor. Anything over 72
degrees and you are inviting your friend the
tobacco beetle in for a meal.
